Big Words – Right, so I was thinking about this scenario last night for some reason I haven’t figured yet, but the scenario went something like this:
Me-Blah blah, explaining something, blah blah, “big word” like fulgurant (<-Look it up. It’s a word, no matter how much it’s underlined!)
Random person that I seemingly know-Wait wait…what does that mean?
Me-Oh, it means flashing like lightning. Y’know (<- Seriously, that isn’t underlined?), like brilliant, dazzling, or striking to the utmost, I guess.
RPTISK-Why can’t you just say dazzling then? Why do you have to make it so complicated? I mean c’mon, you don’t have to show off or “prove” how smart you are. What’s the point of saying it anyway of no one understands you?
Me-Because one of the ways we illuminate ourselves and the world around us is through words. One of the things we should realize early on is that many things (material, experiences, feelings, people, etc.) are different, even if they seem the same. So why should we describe them as the same? Maybe you don’t understand, so here’s an example: You have a skyscraper looming over you. How would you describe it?
Me-Right. Then, you have another building that’s bigger than the first one and another one even bigger than the first two. They’re all big but different kinds of big and it’s not helpful to call them all big to someone who can’t see them. You would say the first one is big but the second one is huge! And the third? Well, that’s monstrous! Titanic! Immense! Etc. Or if someone was mad but someone else infuriated! Or just irritated! Understood?
RPTISK- … Yes …
Me-And if you don’t understand me, there’s no harm in asking and learning. Trust me, expansion of the vocabulary is a must for many people!
*Laughter* And then we go skipping off into the sunset…
That’s all fantasy and it probably wouldn’t go that well in reality but it really irks me when people ask, “Why not just use regular words?” I get it, you didn’t understand and it made you embarrassed (I’ve been there) or the person talking is a pompous donkey who just uses words for display but there’s no harm in just asking/learning is there? I admire N for that. She asks. She learns. Now she knows.
EPOCH - If you could live in any Earthly era, which would it be? Where? And why? This one, here, and haven’t we done so much in the past to make sure this present is far more progressive than it was? You hear talk of a simpler time. You hear talk of people with old souls. You hear talk of people with old souls who wish they were born in the past to a simpler time. Was it really simpler or just more ignorant? Don’t get me wrong, there were customs that we should’ve kept, there were problems that we didn’t have, there was an appreciation of simplicity that now may be going rare, but we’ve come this far, haven’t we? With every passing day, we not just strive to survive but to be better, don’t we? I don’t know. I probably have more to say, I always do. Nothing against people who want to live in the past, sometimes I do too (or the future…or on Mars), it’s just, it could *always* be worse or better. *I don’t know for sure always but it sound better than most of time*
Television - I’m starting to really dislike it. Even if some shows are supposed to be educational, it turns to become solely for entertainment. Major issues become trivial for entertainment and trivial issues are made major for entertainment while we sit there soaking it in, enjoying. Whatever. That’s for later.
I’m getting the hang of this and I’m starting to like it.
